About

About the Show

This show celebrates black hair by exploring its historical, cultural and individual impact on black women. The artworks aim to reflect the lives and experiences of some black women in order to evoke a resonating feeling of nostalgia.

About the Artist

While many of you may know her as the girl with the big 'fro that was not always the case. Surprising right? Like many black girls growing up in the 2000's Autumn had permed hair. To shock you even further, she was not aware of her natural hair texture until she was twelve years old. While some of you may be surprised reading this, this is a shared story among many black women. Autumn's experiences and the common experiences of black women around her have inspired this body of work, in addition to the artist Mickalene Thomas. The experiences document the changes in conversation about black hair as it is percieved by society and an individual.
